Building a mission team is not just about gathering people who are willing to travel—it’s about bringing together individuals who are ready to serve with humility, faith, and a heart for others. Recruiting the right people can make the difference between a mission that simply completes tasks and one that truly transforms lives.
The first step in recruiting a strong mission team is to focus on the heart, not just the skillset. While abilities and talents are valuable, the most important quality is a servant’s heart. In Philippians 2:3–4 we are reminded: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Missions require people who are willing to put others first and serve with genuine compassion.
Another important factor is spiritual readiness. Mission work can be challenging—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Recruiting people who are committed to prayer, growth, and dependence on God helps create a team that can remain strong even when things don’t go as planned. Encourage potential volunteers to spend time seeking God’s guidance before committing to the trip.
Team unity is also essential. A mission team works best when its members are willing to collaborate, support one another, and maintain a positive attitude. Look for people who are flexible, teachable, and able to work well with others. Missions often require adapting to new cultures, schedules, and circumstances, so humility and patience are key.
Finally, consider diversity within the team. A strong mission group benefits from a variety of gifts—leaders, organizers, encouragers, and practical helpers. Each person plays a role in making the mission effective and impactful.
Recruiting the right people is not about building the biggest team, but the most committed one. When individuals come together with the right heart, shared purpose, and willingness to serve, God can do incredible things through them.
